What grade do I need on my final?

The formula behind the calculator

To reach a target course grade, the score you need on the final depends on three things: the grade you already have, the grade you want, and how much the final is worth.

Needed score = (target grade - current grade x (1 - weight)) / weight

Weight here is written as a decimal, so a final worth 20 percent is 0.20. The calculator above does the arithmetic for you and updates the moment you type, so you can try different targets in seconds.

How to use this calculator

Three inputs, one clear answer

Enter your current grade as a percentage and how much the final is worth. The calculator shows the score you need on the final for an A, a B, a C, and a passing grade, all at once, so you can see every option in one glance. Each grade is marked green when you have already locked it in, or flagged when it is out of reach. Already took the final? Switch to the My final grade tab and enter your score to see the grade you will finish the class with.

Worked examples

The math on real numbers

A final worth 20 percent. You have an 88 and want a 90. You need (90 - 88 x 0.80) / 0.20, which works out to 98 on the final. Tough but possible.

A final worth 30 percent. You have a 75 and want an 80. You need (80 - 75 x 0.70) / 0.30, which is about 91.7 on the final. The heavier weight gives you more room to climb.

A final worth 40 percent. You have a 68 and want to pass with a 60. You need (60 - 68 x 0.60) / 0.40, which is about 48 on the final. Because the final is worth so much, a modest score is enough to pull you up to passing.

Why your final exam weight matters

The single biggest factor in your result

The weight is the single biggest factor in how much the final can move your grade. A final worth 10 percent can barely shift your average, so if you are far from your target it may be out of reach. A final worth 40 percent can rescue a struggling grade, but it can also sink a strong one, so it deserves your best preparation. Always check the syllabus for the real weight before you plan your studying.

There is no standard weight, and it varies from class to class. If you want a rough sense of what is typical, teaching researchers recommend weighting a final somewhere between 10 and 30 percent, but that is advice to instructors, not a rule, so your own syllabus is the only number that counts.

When a grade is out of reach

What to do when the number is above 100

Sometimes the number you need is above 100, which is not possible on a normal exam. The calculator flags this in red and shows the highest grade you can still finish with. It is not the end of the world. Ask your instructor whether there is extra credit, a curve, or a chance to replace a low assignment. Aim for the highest grade that is still reachable, since every point protects your GPA. For longer term habits that keep you out of this spot, see our guide to studying smarter.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what students ask most

What grade do I need on my final to pass?

Enter your current grade and your final exam weight above, then read the Pass row in the table. It shows the exact score you need on the final to finish with a passing grade, usually 60 percent or higher.

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Use this formula: needed score equals the target grade minus your current grade times one minus the weight, all divided by the weight. If your current grade is 88, your target is 90, and the final is worth 20 percent, you need 98 on the final.

What if my final is worth 0 percent?

If the final does not count toward your grade, no score on it can change your result, so the calculator cannot solve for a needed grade. Double check your syllabus, since most finals carry some weight.

Can I get more than 100 percent on my final?

No. A normal exam is capped at 100 percent. If the calculator says you need more than 100, your target is out of reach with the final alone. Ask your instructor about extra credit or other options.

What grade do I need to keep my GPA?

First decide the course grade that protects your GPA, then read that row in the results to see the score you need on the final. If you are not sure what that course grade should be, use our GPA calculator to test different outcomes first.

Why does the final exam weight matter so much?

The weight decides how much the final can move your grade. A final worth 40 percent can swing your grade far more than one worth 10 percent, which is why the same exam score leads to very different results depending on the weight.
