240 Research Topics for College Students, Sorted by Subject

Picking a research topic is easier when you are choosing from a list than when you are staring at a blank page. Below are 240 topics across 24 subjects, from sociology and physics to criminal justice and public health.
Treat them as starting points, not finished titles. A topic is a subject. A paper needs a question, and the two are not the same thing.
Skim to your subject, take anything that pulls at you, then read the last section. That is where a topic becomes something you can finish in one semester.

How to Turn One of These Into a Research Question
Every topic above is a subject, not a question, and that is the gap most papers stall in. A subject tells you which shelf to stand in front of. A question tells you when you are finished.
There is a quick test for whether yours is the right size. Search it in your library database. Drowning in results means it is too broad, and almost nothing back means it is too narrow. The University of Michigan-Flint library puts the target as narrow enough to stay interesting and broad enough to find adequate information.
When a topic is too big, cut it along one of these lines. USC Libraries lists eight, and these four do most of the work:
Place. Not social media and teenagers, but social media and teenagers in US public high schools.
Time. Not the history of protest movements, but protest movements between 2020 and 2025.
Group. Not the effects of student debt, but the effects of student debt on first generation graduates.
Aspect. Not the impact of social media on behavior, but its impact on sleep.
Stack two of them and a list entry becomes a paper. Take The Impact of Social Media on Youth Behavior from the sociology section, add a place and an aspect, and you get: how has nightly social media use affected sleep among US high school students since 2020? That is answerable, and you can already picture the sources.
One warning before you commit. Some topics have been written to death, and instructors have read hundreds of them. Abortion and gun control are the usual examples. You can still take one, but only with an angle nobody else in the room is taking.
It also helps to pick in the direction of what you are already good at. If you are not sure what that is, work through a list of student strengths and weaknesses first, then come back and choose the topic that plays to the top of it.
Still nothing pulling at you? Skimming a page of science facts is a cheap way to trip over something you did not know you were curious about, and that is usually where a decent topic starts.
One last thing. A finished research paper is one of the few pieces of a semester you can still point at a year later, so it is worth treating as more than a grade. If you want the wider plan it sits inside, our student success roadmap maps the rest of the term around it.
Research Topic FAQs
What is the difference between a research topic and a research question? A topic is the subject you are writing about, such as social media and teenagers. A question is what your paper sets out to answer about it, such as how nightly social media use affects sleep in high school students. A topic gives you a section of the library. A question gives you a paper with a beginning and an end.
How do I know if my topic is too broad? Search it in your library database. If you are buried in results and cannot tell which ones matter, it is too broad. If you get almost nothing back, it is too narrow. The University of Michigan-Flint library puts it as narrow enough to stay interesting and broad enough to find adequate information.
Can I use one of these topics exactly as written? You can hand one in as a starting point, but most instructors want something narrower than a list entry. Add a place, a time period, a specific group or a single aspect, and the topic becomes yours rather than one of a hundred identical submissions.
What makes a good research topic? Three things: you can find real sources on it, it is small enough to cover properly in the length you were given, and there is genuinely something to argue or find out. If the answer is already obvious, there is no paper in it.
Should I avoid popular research topics? Not always, but be careful with the ones every class writes about, such as abortion or gun control. Library guides flag them because instructors have read hundreds of them. If you want one, come in through an angle nobody else is taking.
